[00:00:11] Hello and welcome back to Rev Real Estate School. I'm your host Michael Montgomery. Today we are talking about good habits and the simplest way that you can keep good habits as you move forward in real estate and in life. For that matter.
[00:00:27] We start off with a story. This is a story of a 23 year old stockbroker true story. Trent Dyrsmid and he started out in a city called Abbotsford. It's just outside of Vancouver Canada. And he started as a new stockbroker. And people didn't think too much of this guy. He was young 23 years old and he was outside of Vancouver which was the main hub of where all the business happened. So people didn't think too much of him. And he started any kind of just started along like normal. But then something happened. His business took off. And what he said the reason was was just due to this one habit that he had. He knew that throughout his day he had to make a certain number of phone calls one hundred and twenty phone calls and he would have a good day. He said the rest of the world would get to him as far as news goes or other things would happen. He didn't worry too much about following the news and following every stock and that sort of thing. He just focused on making 120 calls every single day. And the way that he did this was what with what's called the paper clip strategy.
[00:01:40] We're going to learn how to do this today it's very very simple. And it's something that can change your business and keep you focused. What he did was he started every single day with two jars one jar had 120 paperclips. The other jar was empty. After each call he would just move one paperclip over to the empty jar and he would not stop until the second jar was full of the paperclips.
[00:02:05] It was a visual cue that he was using to move the paperclip from one side to the next. Then after his first year he was bringing five million into the firm and he jumped up to one of the top producing stockbrokers at his office in one year's time. And then he went on to start looking at this strategy in a little bit more detail and what it can do for people. Now you can see the direct correlation in real estate. He was making sales calls were making sales calls. And what it was doing was like we were saying it was the power of this visual trigger. It was a visual cue that he employed in order to help him move forward. It's a clear evidence of the progress that you're making. So this is extra motivating when you're actually seeing the paper clip go from one side to the next and see the jar get bigger and more full. It's more motivating.
[00:03:00] It all comes down to one very simple truth that we will see and we will hear throughout our real estate careers that success is often just the result of committing to the fundamentals over and over and over again. Now the thing about sales calls and sales and prospecting in general is we know we need to do it. And oftentimes we get quite motivated if we've gone to a conference or if we read a new book we're motivated and we're ready to jump right in and we say to ourselves you know what for real this time I am going to start prospecting every single day. But a few days later we know what happens the motivation fades busyness of life steps in and we simply forget and stop doing that good habit with the paperclip strategy. Every day you come in and sit down at your desk. You are going to see those paper clips and you can even start with something like 10 or 15 paper clips. So you have to send 10 or 15 phone calls e-mails and texts and then work your way up from there. But all you have to do is make sure at the end of the day that your paper clips have moved from one side to the next.
[00:04:14] In previous years I can't count the amount of times that I got started with my prospecting and I was just checking it off on a piece of paper I was just doing a little line saying how many calls I made. And this although it can work. It's not the same visual cue as moving something from one side to the next. And watching that pile get larger it's so motivating. And there's a ton of power behind it.
[00:04:40] Now you can even extend this beyond real estate so if you think about it if you can think about sending thank you notes if you want to send two thank you notes a day or a certain number a week or if you want to eat healthier workout more read more books whatever that might be you can use this strategy you can employ this in many different ways throughout your life. And it's a very quick hack in order to help you stick to your goals and stick to your habits because we know what we need to do it's just a matter of doing it consistently and on a daily basis and not missing day after day.
[00:05:18] Thank you very much for listening to this episode. I hope you got a ton of value out of it and this is one of these strategies that you can start today or first thing tomorrow if you're listening to this in the evening you can start this right away and I would recommend doing so.
